COLUMBUS, Ohio (PRWEB) January 29, 2018 -- UNCF will host the sixth annual mayor’s luncheon on Friday, February 2nd at the downtown Hyatt Regency beginning at 11:30 a.m. Benefiting historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), UNCF aims to change the narrative of HBCUs across the nation by equipping minority students with the resources necessary to transition into college and ultimately the workforce. More than 350 will attend the luncheon, including Mayor Andrew J. Ginther, Columbus Council president Shannon Hardin, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and business, civic and education leaders that support UNCF’s work in getting students to and through college.
“We are delighted to once again share the impact of UNCF with the Columbus community and showcase not only our schools, but our promising young students who are poised to change the world,” said Natalie R. Coles, area development director, UNCF
With the help of the Columbus community, last year $1,611,000 was awarded to Ohio students attending schools such as UNCF member institution and HBCU Wilberforce University. And now, with the release of UNCF’s new publication, HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, we know graduates from HBCUs Wilberforce and Central State universities, contributed $124 million to the total economic impact and over 1,234 in total employment impact to the state of Ohio.
“Events such as the UNCF Columbus Mayor’s Luncheon, stress the importance of HBCUs,” said Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO of UNCF. “HBCUs not only provide a college education for 300,000 students every year, but they are a powerful economic engine: locally, through the jobs they create and the expenditures they make in the cities where they are located, and nationally, through the students they educate and prepare for an information-age workforce.”
UNCF Columbus Mayor’s Luncheon is sponsored by Columbia Gas, Honda, Huntington Bank, Farmers Insurance, L Brands, Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority, Mount Carmel Health and Porter Wright Morris and Arthur.
The program will also feature UNCF scholar Markayla Brooks and the Ft. Hayes choir and jazz Band.
