Dozens Caught in Summer Sex Sting Operation
(PRWEB) October 15, 2013 -- The Polk and Lake County Sheriffs Departments conducted one of the largest sting operations in history this summer. They caught 41 alleged sex offenders, using a computer to seduce a minor and attempted lewd battery according to the Orlando Sentinel (6.17.13).
This operation was conducted in the same format as most other sting operations. Detectives started the operation by creating online accounts and pretending to be minors. When an adult would contact them, start a sexual discussion and ask to meet, the detectives, posing as minors, would direct them to a location where they would be arrested according to the Huffington Post.
Over the course of just one week, this sting operation managed to catch 40 men and 1 woman. Some of the alleged sex offenders traveled from another country to meet with the supposed minors as the Ledger (10.12.13) stated.
"Nothing can ever compensate for the trauma as a child, but the money awarded can be used to help afford treatment and rebuild a ruined life," commented Michael Steinger of Steinger, Iscoe & Greene.
According to the Ledger, this is just the latest group of suspects caught through this sting operation. Polk Country conducts this operation many times throughout the year and this is the seventh sting in Central Florida this year.
"Depending on the specific charges, those caught face up to 15 years in prison and their names could be added to the state registered sex offenders list," stated Steinger. "If added to the list, any community they live in will receive an alert with their criminal background for many years after they serve their time."
Those suspects traveling from another county to meet the "minors" face even stiffer penalties. Traveling to meet a minor is a felony, which is punished by more jail time, losing the right to vote, gain professional licenses and own weapons.
