(PRWEB) May 19, 2014 -- Dr Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon and the owners of the successful Langley Dental Practice in Manchester. This Manchester born and educated dentist was one of the youngest dentists to graduate in the United Kingdom. With years of experience in busy dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia, Dr Drabu achieved his Fellowship in Oral Surgery at Edinburgh University. He is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Assessment Clinic and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale and actively tutors and mentors postgraduate dentists on oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.
Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about a recent article published in the Denistry Today website on how low vitamin D levels can increase the risk of cavities in children. The full article can be read here.
Dr Tariq Drabu said “Vitamin D is important in the development of the hard tissues of the body such as bone, dentine and enamel, the hard coating that covers the tooth. The enamel is one of the strongest substances you can find in the human body and enamel which is weakened will result in a cavity.”
Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say “Studies have showed that enamel forms while the baby is still in the womb, which means a pregnant woman with a low vitamin D level can have an impact on her baby before the teeth are even formed. Vitamin D regulates the phosphate and calcium within the body and is often gained from sunlight. Unfortunately living in the UK we only have limited sunlight, which means that we have to find our vitamin D from different sources such as salmon, eggs and breakfast cereals.”
Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying “Women who had regulated vitamin D in their systems while pregnant had a higher chance of having children that did not suffer from dental cavities, while those with low levels had children with ongoing dental cavities. According to the NHS a pregnant woman should take a daily vitamin D supplement to help their new born baby regulate their calcium levels. A daily dose of ten micrograms of vitamin D should be taken daily. If we can educate people on the importance of this vitamin and how it will impact their children later in life, we can help reduce the number of children visiting the dentist for interventional treatment at early ages.”
