Eastern Shore Greenhouse Project Receives Maryland Energy Administration Game Changers Grant
Cambridge, Maryland (PRWEB) September 25, 2013 -- Cambridge EnTech, a division of Cambridge International, is pleased to learn that the Maryland Hawk Corporation Technologies Greenhouse is a recipient of the Maryland Energy Administration’s (MEA) Game Changers grant program. Cambridge EnTech signed a teaming agreement with Maryland Hawk Corporation in 2012 to partner on the project.
The project includes the installation of a Biomass Boiler/Organic Rankine Cycle Generator CHP System at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Campus that will establish the first biomass boiler/generator system of its kind to heat a three-acre greenhouse (1MMBTU/300kW) this winter. The generation of electricity will be through an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) generator that will be added to a larger micro-grid to be developed in the next phase of the project.
Cambridge EnTech will be responsible for supplying the gasification technology, pollution control devices, ORC and will also install and operate the system at the greenhouse. And the grant will mitigate high upfront engineering costs associated with novel applications of proven biomass, environmental, and ORC technologies.
“Being awarded this grant from MEA is exciting for us,” said Dion Banks, Director of Governmental Affairs for Cambridge. “This is an opportunity for us to play a strategic role in the future of approved energy sources for the state of Maryland.”
This will be the first greenhouse on Maryland’s Eastern Shore that will be used as an educational site for both students and the local community on the benefits of renewable energy. Cambridge EnTech also signed a teaming agreement with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to further the instructional, research and public service objectives of the university. Together, Cambridge and UMES will work to demonstrate gasification technologies for converting biomass to energy, and promote implementing pollution control technologies.
“This is a prime example of a successful public/private partnership. By partnering with UMES and with Maryland Hawk Corporation, Cambridge International has access to UMES faculty that represent a wide range of expertise in numerous fields,” said Banks. “Together we can identify and create solutions that lead to industry breakthroughs and new market opportunities for Cambridge.”
