Eugene Lowry Featured at Dayton, OH, Seminary's Preaching Seminar
Dayton, Ohio (PRWEB) June 30, 2015 -- United Theological Seminary will hold its 13th annual Summer Preaching Seminar from Aug. 11 to Aug. 13, hosted on United’s campus at 4501 Denlinger Rd., Dayton, Ohio. During this special three-day preaching seminar, guest speaker Rev. Dr. Eugene L. Lowry will speak on the theme, “The Poetry of the Parables: Preaching as Improvisation.” Participants will explore how to use the structure of Jesus’ parables to create lively and interesting sermons over the course of seven sessions, including “Preaching as Event in Time” and “The Aristotle Blues.”
Dr. Lowry is the author of six books on narrative preaching and former Professor of Preaching at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri, where he taught for over 30 years. He is an ordained United Methodist minister and has written and lectured extensively on preaching, worship, biblical study, educational philosophy and creativity. He is also an accomplished blues/jazz pianist.
Of preaching the parables, Dr. Lowry says, “When Wynton Marsalis improvises, it is called ‘resolving the composition.’ When [preachers] do it, I call it ‘evoking the text.’”
