Everest Academy Students Celebrate Summer with Field Days
Lemont, IL (PRWEB) July 01, 2014 -- The students at Everest Academy enjoyed a beautiful day along Bell Road on the school’s open land during their annual Field Day. Field Day gave the students an opportunity to show not only their physical coordination and athletic skills but also good sportsmanship and team spirit.
With the Olympic Games as the format, student teams were organized by grade with each class representing a different country. Each team wore a different color t-shirt and created a team cheer or clap that showed spirit and unity. The day began with an opening ceremony consisting of the parade of athletes, the singing of the national anthem, and opening prayer. Teams were judged not only on how they performed in the competitive races and events, but also on their conduct, attitude and sportsmanship. Mr. Robert Gath, physical education director/instructor at Everest Academy, read the creed, or guiding principle, of the modern Olympic Games which is a quote by Baron de Coubertin, "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
Students participated in a variety of competitive events that were fun and challenging for all age levels. The ‘dunk tank’ was a huge hit, especially when Father Jon Burke, LC climbed in and sat down on the bench with a big smile. Dodge ball, the photo booth and basketball were the indoor events that gave the students a break from the bright sun. Parents volunteers were responsible for coordinating the day and found themselves complimented on everything from the chosen events to the concession stand food to the clockwork rotation of the event schedule. Mrs. Michelle Lio, parent coordinator and mother of three athletes, had this to say, “I am so glad the day ran smoothly and all enjoyed the games and activities! All age groups participated 110% with enthusiasm and spirit, and that is what Field Day is all about!”
During Field Day at Everest the students have a chance to practice the growth they have experienced this past year in character development, which an Everest education addresses. This was the first year that Everest Field Day was set up as a competition within the same grade levels. In the past teams were a cross section of all grade levels. This change in the format of Field Day is reflective of Everest Academy’s growth over the past few years. This change brought the Field Day to a new level of physical competition and a heightened level of enthusiasm and encouraging spirit. Teams excelled at age appropriate speed and balance, and also on being kind, following the rules, working hard and working together. Winning metals were determined based on a combination of athletic performance and character strength.
