Fantasy Novel Focused on Empowered Teen Girls Breaks Globally on November 25th
Covina, CA (PRWEB) November 07, 2013 -- The empowerment of teenage girls has become a big theme in book publishing recently. Now, it comes to science fiction and fantasy.
Claudette Marco’s new novel, Satchel & Sword I: The Search for the Saluka Stone, is catching the eyes of convention planners, readers and booksellers nationwide with its captivating adventure set around 15-year-old heroine Nevaline Scarcliff.
The Search for the Saluka Stone releases worldwide November 25.
The Covina, CA-based Marco and her novel, the first of a planned trilogy, will be featured at the prestigious ConCarolinas Sci Fi/Fantasy Convention May 30-June 1, 2014, in Charlotte, NC. Marco will participate on four panels at the convention, which will also honor legendary author George R.R. Martin.
“I am so delighted to be coming to ConCarolinas, especially with George R.R. Martin being the guest of honor,” Marco said. “It will be great to talk about the book and my heroine, Nevaline, as well as where I’m going with YA fantasy in terms of the teenage heroine figure.”
Science fiction and fantasy titles sell upwards of 20 million books per year. While overall print sales are shrinking slightly, young adult fantasy market is growing by an estimated 15 percent per year, according to Publisher’s Weekly. However, few books put the fate of the story and characters into the hands of a teenage girl, as does Marco with the young Amazonian warrior Nevaline Scarcliff. Her reasons are compelling – and directly in line with her personal desire to empower younger women.
“Generally, that is the age in which we begin to explore who we are,” Marco said. At this point, we have had some schooling, and we can begin to test our resolve when life’s big problems arise. Personally, I felt like I was beginning my life again when I began writing these books. I was going back to a time when I first began writing, my childhood, and I had truly found who I was and began exploring my potential, like a teenager. So writing my main character as a young adult was fitting.”
In her “Satchel & Sword” trilogy, which opens with The Search for the Saluka Stone, Marco has created a captivating world derived from elements of 14th century Scotland, Central America, and Mongolia. It provides the setting for a storyline taut with intrigue, adventure, suspense, powerful magic and a few surprises. "It's like the Lord of the Rings meets a teenaged Xena: The Warrior Princess," Marco said.
The Search for the Saluka Stone goes on sale through online booksellers worldwide on November 25. It may also be ordered through bookstores.
