First Responders Needed in the Growing Field of Hyperbaric Medicine
Tarrytown, NY (PRWEB) January 28, 2016 -- First responders looking for a second career should consider the growing hyperbaric medicine field. The Life Support Technologies Group (LST), Tarrytown, NY offers currently licensed Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics a pathway to becoming board-Certified Hyperbaric Technologists (CHT).
The first step is to take an accredited, 40-hour introductory course in hyperbaric medicine, such as those offered by LST in the NY-NJ-CT region. LST’s 2016 courses are scheduled as follows: Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY, February 26 – March 1; Virtua Hospital, Voorhees, NJ, April 14-18; Nassau University Medical Center, East Meadow, NY, September 23-27.
After successfully completing an accredited introductory hyperbaric medicine course, EMTs and Paramedics can start working as hyperbaric technicians and accrue the required 480 hours working in a hyperbaric unit to become eligible to sit for the CHT board exam.
Currently, in the United States, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approve hyperbaric treatment for fifteen (15) medical indications. Most commercial insurance carriers follow CMS guidelines for hyperbaric treatment reimbursement.
Very strong camaraderie within the first responder community leads many EMTs and Paramedics to split their time between their new hyperbaric medicine career and weekend or evening work on “the bus” – the first responder community’s nickname for an ambulance.
Hyperbaric Medical treatment involves placing a patient in a specially designed pressure vessel known as a hyperbaric chamber that can be pressurized greater than atmospheric pressure. The patient breathes 100% oxygen while under increased pressure. Monoplace hyperbaric chambers are the most common and are designed to treat one patient at a time. Multiplace chambers are purpose-built and can accommodate as many patients as they are built for.
