Flood Law Group Comments on Fatal Tractor-Trailer Crash in California
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) April 29, 2014 -- Flood Law Group released a statement today commenting on an accident involving a tractor-trailer and a bus that claimed the lives of 10 people in California recently.
According to a report from CBS News (Feds: FedEx truck didn't appear to brake before crashing into bus, 4/12/2014), a tractor-trailer operated by FedEx struck a bus carrying high school students, resulting in a fiery collision that killed 10 people.
According to the report, federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are looking into the cause of the crash, and examining whether or not fire safety measures that had previously been recommended for charter busses could have had an impact on the number of casualties in the accident. The report also states that fire safety has been a longstanding concern of the NTSB.
The report references a similar incident in 2005 in which 23 fatalities resulted from a bus crash that resulted in a fire. According to the report, the NTSB made recommendations for safety standards such as improved fuel tanks in the wake of that incident, and more recently suggested that buses add fire suppression systems similar to those found in high rise buildings.
According to the CBS News report, the NTSB has no authority to require the safety changes that it recommends in the wake of accidents that it investigates. However, the report also states that a bill passed by congress in June 2012 directed the Department of Transportation to conduct research and tests on ways to prevent fires or mitigate their effects on American roadways.
“Companies that own charter buses should review the fire safety recommendations outlined by the National Transportation Safety Board and make an attempt to follow those guidelines as best they can,” said Christopher Brown, Director of Communications for Flood Law Group. “Following these safety measures could save lives. High profile traffic accidents with large numbers of fatalities often result in legal action, and a company that makes an effort to abide by the safety standards recommended by Federal safety officials will leave themselves more protected in the event of a lawsuit.”
