Florida Doctor’s Technique Fixes Breast Implant Complications
Winter Park, FL (PRWEB) February 20, 2014 -- Women continue to face fear and intense insecurity when they’re told nothing can be done to fix a poorly completed breast reconstruction, breast augmentation or breast enhancement surgery.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2012 more than 90,000 women underwent a post-cancer breast reconstructive surgery and more than 280,000 women elected for breast augmentation.
A common procedure for breast reconstruction surgery involves a tissue expander, waiting for the tissue to stretch and inserting silicone or gel implants. While some women are happy with the outcome, many find themselves feeling left out in the cold, in search of a solution, helpless and unsatisfied with the results of their breast reconstruction surgeries post-mastectomy or with mishandled breast augmentation procedures, which used tissue expanders. According to the FDA, within eight to 10 years after a woman receives breast implants, as many as 20 percent of patients have their implants removed due to unforeseen consequences and dissatisfaction with their results.
One doctor believes he has the solution these women seek.
Dr. Jeffrey Hartog, expert in breast augmentation and regenerative breast surgery at the Bougainvillea Clinique in Winter Park, Fla., uses the Lipoflap Autologous Fat Transfer (LAFT) procedure to correct breast implant complications and to assist patients who experience unsatisfactory results after breast reconstruction using the common method of breast implants and tissue expanders.
“In many cases, the skin too stretched over the expander, resulting in a very thin layer of skin, making the implant very noticeable,” said Hartog. “Women often have an inadequate amount of tissue over their implants and I see it as the most common underlying cause of implant-related complications.”
Not only can this be unsettling for the patient, but other complications associated with this method can arise, including problems with implant position, spacing between the breasts, rippling and hardening.
The LAFT procedure is unique because it involves transferring fat to thicken and improve the quality of the tissue and skin overlaying the breast implants. As the tissue thickens through LAFT, the quality of the implant and the end result greatly improve. Hartog asserts that the advantages of the LAFT procedure include immediate improvement in the natural look and feel of the breasts, correction of hardening, restoration of the sensation of the overlying skin and the ability to remove the implants altogether if desired. Hartog advises women who face breast reconstruction to choose the LAFT as the main procedure, foregoing the traditional tissue expander and implant procedure.
Having completed more than 4,000 breast procedures, Dr. Hartog understands firsthand a breast cancer survivor’s need to regain her sense of womanhood after a mastectomy and the need for correctly formed breasts; his wife, Michelle, underwent a mastectomy in 2010 and subsequently had her breasts reconstructed.
Hartog, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, has presented on breast reconstruction with fat nationally and internationally.
