Franklin County Is Home To Christmas At Renfrew--A Holiday Tradition
Franklin County PA (PRWEB) October 31, 2014 -- The Franklin County Visitors Bureau wants to stir the Yuletide spirit with a visit to Renfrew Museum & Park in Waynesboro PA. Fresh pine, soft candle light, and familiar carols will kindle a warm holiday spirit as the volunteers of Renfrew Museum and Park share the holiday traditions of the past at Christmas On The Farm, Friday and Saturday, December 5-6. Travel back to the early 1800s when Renfrew was a working farm. Tour the 1812 stone farmhouse decorated with pine roping and flickering lights. Enjoy the sounds and smells of the holiday season and experience life on a German farmstead during the Christmas season. A special, one-act holiday play--A Renfrew Christmas--premiered last holiday season and will be performed again this year at the Fahnestock House. Visit a Pennsylvania German farm family as they cook and enjoy their holiday meal, be sure to stop to pet the farm animals, and watch the cabinet maker demonstrating his colonial craftsmanship.
Today Renfrew Museum & Park is more than 100 acres of beauty; but in the 1800s, it was a working German farm, where Daniel and Catherine Royer raised ten children and lived a hard-working, productive life. The main house, called the Royer farmhouse, was built about 1812 and recently celebrated its 200th birthday. Renfrew Park also houses the Fahnestock farmhouse, constructed in 1852, a smokehouse, springhouse, and two distinctive barns. Visitors to Renfrew can learn more about the early American lifestyle of the German farmer and the history of Renfrew in a series of three books written by Maxine Beck and Marie Lanser Beck. The first book, written in 2011, was The Royers of Renfrew — A Family Tapestry. In 2012 came Royers of Renfrew — Threads of Change. The final novel, Royers of Renfrew— Fabric of Life, debuted in fall 2013. The trilogy is available at Renfrew Museum and Park, at bookstores in Waynesboro, and online through Amazon. A portion of proceeds help to benefit Renfrew Museum and Park and Renfrew Institute for Environmental and Cultural Education. This holiday, consider giving a piece of Franklin County--The Royers of Renfrew trilogy.
