A unique coalition of partners from around the world will present the American celebration of the canonizations of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII. Pope Francis will formally proclaim the former popes saints during an April 27 Mass at the Vatican.
Cardinal Donald Wuerl and the Archdiocese of Washington; Georgetown University; the ambassadors of Poland, Italy and Argentina; and WETA will present the “Peace Through Music ‘In Our Age’” concert on May 5 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The ambassadors represent the native countries of Pope John Paul II (Poland), John XXIII (Italy) and Pope Francis (Argentina).
Special guests have been invited to the musical celebration, which is being offered free of charge, and a limited number of tickets are available to the public. The concert will be broadcast nationally on PBS later in the year.
The Washington Choral Arts Society will perform along with Carnegie Hall’s orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Krakow Philharmonic Choir, and solo vocal artists from the U.S., Poland, Italy, Argentina, and U.K.
The concert will be conducted by famed American conductor Sir Gilbert Levine. It is the only musical celebration of the canonizations and will celebrate the popes’ devotion to interreligious understanding.
Levine will attend the canonization ceremony in Rome on April 27. Dubbed “The Pope’s Maestro,” Levine conducted concerts for Pope John Paul II for 17 years, including the 2004 Papal Concert of Reconciliation dedicated to ecumenical understanding among Catholics, Jews and Muslims.
