Grossman Burn Center Announces the Passing of Dr. A. Richard Grossman
West Hills, CA (PRWEB) March 17, 2014 -- Dr. A. Richard Grossman, the founder of the Grossman Burn Center, died peacefully of natural causes on Thursday, March 13 at his home Thousand Oaks, CA. Dr. Grossman was 81 years old.
In 1958, a devastating fire destroyed an elementary school in Chicago. The victims were taken to Cook County Hospital where Dr. Grossman was the Emergency Room resident on duty. 93 children and four adults perished that night in what became a life-changing experience for Dr. Grossman. He resolved to create a world class comprehensive burn treatment facility, a mission he fulfilled in 1969 when he founded the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles.
For more than four decades, the Grossman Burn Center has been on the cutting edge of surgical burn care. Many pioneering techniques which are now standard practice in the treatment of burns were developed by Dr. Grossman. When he founded the Grossman Burn Center in 1969, burn care focused almost exclusively on patient survival; today, the focus is on restoring the lives of burn survivors, physically, emotionally, and cosmetically. http://www.Grossmanburncenter.com.
The Grossman Burn Center, now headquartered at West Hills Hospital and Medical Center with additional centers in Bakersfield, CA, Phoenix, AZ, and Kansas City, MO, continues to be an industry leader under the Direction of Dr. Grossman’s son, Dr. Peter H. Grossman, who joined his father in practice in 1995.
Throughout his career, Dr. Grossman treated and restored the lives of thousands of patients—firefighters, children, celebrities, and patients from all over the world who traveled to Los Angeles to seek his care.
Dr. Grossman’s greatest passion was the ongoing care of burn survivors. In 2004, he started an annual “Family Camp,” for former patients to come together with their families to strengthen the bond they share as survivors and as former Grossman patients. Additionally, Dr. Grossman and his wife Elizabeth hosted “Camp Brookfield” at their farm in Thousand Oaks, an annual event where child burn survivors could play and build confidence and self-esteem in a safe, controlled environment. Most recently, Dr. Grossman, with his wife, Elizabeth Rice Grossman, launched the “Dr. Richard Grossman Community Foundation” which provides grants to non-profit organizations serving the local community. The Foundation’s first grant was announced earlier this month, a $100,000 contribution to the Boys and Girls’ Club of Greater Conejo Valley to fund an after-school, homework-assistance program.
Dr. Grossman is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Rice Grossman, son Jeffrey Grossman, son Dr. Peter H. Grossman and his wife Rebecca Gray Grossman, step-son John W. Larson, and five grandchildren.
