Henderson Impact Will Engage Hundreds of Volunteers, Feed Thousands of Children
Henderson, Kentucky (PRWEB) September 02, 2016 -- Henderson Impact volunteers and supporters will feed hungry children both globally and locally on September 17. Hosted by seven area United Methodist churches, the meal-packing event is set to take place at Henderson County High School’s auxiliary gymnasium and engage approximately 1,000 volunteers. The effort benefits Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) and Henderson-area food pantries.
“The Henderson Impact partnering churches hold this event to get needed food to starving and dying children around the world and to raise awareness of the effects of starvation on children,” said the Rev. Wayne Burt, pastor of Bennett Memorial United Methodist Church. “One in four children in Henderson County go hungry, so we also wanted to help children in our area. We do this with our food drive to aid local food pantries and a school backpack program.”
Volunteers will prepare 270,000 meals during two shifts on Saturday, September 17, from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. FMSC’s ‘MannaPacks’ are rice-based nutritional meals that are sent to 70 countries to help children survive who would otherwise starve. The community is invited to participate in the event, including groups or teams of individuals; volunteers are needed to help pack meals as well as to set up and clean up the event space.
Event participants will also collect 40,000 pounds of nonperishable food items for Henderson-area food pantries, including Henderson Christian Community Outreach, The Salvation Army and St. Vincent De Paul. Non-perishable items are needed to fulfill this effort and can be donated both before and during Henderson Impact.
Volunteer sign up information, details about food donations and an opportunity to support the event financially are online at hendersonimpact.org or by calling 270-827-3131.
FMSC hosts food-packing events around the country as a way to foster teamwork and unity, while making a real difference in the fight to prevent and reverse malnutrition. The 2016 event marks the third Henderson Impact initiative, which has grown steadily since its inception in 2013. This year’s event is the first to incorporate a local component.
Henderson Impact is funded in part by an event grant from United Methodist Communications’ Rethink Church initiative as a way to help local United Methodist churches in their efforts to join with their community to make a difference in the world.
