Houston Receives Its First IB-Montessori School
Houston, Texas (PRWEB) March 30, 2014 -- In August 2014, The Post Oak School will be the first Montessori school in Houston to offer an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. The school received notification last week of its authorization as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering the IB Diploma Programme (DP). IB has a proven track record of high academic success for students in 3,700 schools in 141 countries across the globe.
“This is a great accomplishment, achieved through the diligent and thoughtful work of many people”, said Head of School John Long. “It is a perfect match for Post Oak and for Montessori high schools. IB asks every candidate school how it will manage the paradigm shift required to adopt IB’s educational methods and philosophy because it is a leap for most schools. For Post Oak there is no paradigm shift required; it will be a seamless transition.” Although this is the first for Houston, other Texas schools in nearby Austin and Dallas have already successfully implemented an IB and Montessori hybrid curriculum. The fusion of these two curriculums seems to be the ideal fit for students.
“Teenagers are hungry for reality”, says Post Oak High School Director James Moudry. “They want real (adult) experiences. High school is the time for deliberate and intentional work in the adult world. The International Baccalaureate, like Montessori, focuses on student experience. At Post Oak, blending these two approaches means building on baseline content in classes and supporting student initiative and independence in taking on real-world activities.”
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is designed for students aged 16 to 19, and is both academically rigorous and stimulates character development. According to the IB website, graduates of the DP generally graduate college at higher rates than their peers who graduate with a standard diploma. Its holistic approach to education prepares students for not only success in higher education, but also for life in a global society.
The Post Oak High School will hold an Open House on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at its Museum District location at 1102 Autrey St., Houston, TX 77006. The open house provides a chance to see this innovative learning environment designed to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills, while cultivating student interest and talent. Topics include: college preparatory curriculum, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, Museum District partnerships, and more.
