Hundreds of Older New Yorkers Feel the Joy of Thanksgiving
(PRWEB) November 28, 2014 -- A joyous spirit filled the room at DOROT’s Thanksgiving Banquet, attended by 275 seniors and the nearly 175 volunteers who helped make their day. This intergenerational program is in its 34th year.
At the same time as the banquet, 215 additional seniors greeted DOROT volunteers in their homes. The volunteers brought the same traditional Thanksgiving meal that was served at the banquet, and stayed for visits, sharing holiday wishes and memories. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman delivered a meal to an Upper West Side senior. Prior to his visit, he thanked the many volunteers setting up for the Banquet and preparing for their own deliveries.
Kol DOROT, a chorus of elders, performed at the banquet, as well as an intergenerational chorus of moms and their children from the 92nd Street Y, the Shababa Mamas. Throughout the event, a jazz band performed and many danced the afternoon away.
Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, State Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal, and City Council Member Helen Rosenthal, all joined the festivities and spoke briefly to the crowd.
On her way out, one senior said she’s been coming to the Thanksgiving Banquet for years, and that DOROT has always treated her like family.
A volunteer shared that this is what starts her Thanksgiving celebration each year – and that it’s the best part of her holiday.
Along with the meal, each senior received an early Chanukah gift, marking the beginning of the holiday season.
