ICS Partners with Sarasota County Jail to Achieve Water Savings
OVIEDO, FL (PRWEB) October 26, 2016 -- Intelligent Conservation Systems, Inc. (ICS), a leading provider of intelligent water conservation technologies, was awarded a bid in the spring of last year to design and install an electronic plumbing control system in the East Wing of the Sarasota County Jail.
The project called for the replacement of the existing system, which had become outdated, developed numerous leaks and provided no way to control or adjust the amount of water usage.
“We relied on our vast experience in correctional facility retrofits to plan and install a system that would not only help the facility achieve its water efficiency goals but would also provide maximum water security and control,” said Chris Peterson, Vice President of Construction and Installation at ICS.
Prior to the retrofit, the Sarasota County Jail East Unit used on average 1.7 million gallons of water a month. After ICS completed the installation of an I-CON electronic plumbing control system, the county jail has seen a decrease of almost 1 million gallons of water a month with a savings of over $180,000 annually in water cost alone.
“The system has been performing great and saving the county a lot of money,” said Bill Martin, Manager II, Facilities Maintenance for Sarasota County. “Doing this project helped the County with absorbing the high water/sewer rates rolled in by the City over the last six years.”
The county purchases all water for the Jail from the City of Sarasota and over the past several years the facility has seen an increase in rates by over 66%.
Improvements have now given the jail total control of its water in the East Unit. Security personnel can remotely control all water to plumbing fixtures from a computer installed in the central command station. The system also prevents inmates from constantly flooding their cells by rapidly flushing, a regular issue seen in correctional facilities around the country.
“Since the system was installed we have experienced a big reduction in maintenance issues” Martin said. “Inmates are no longer using the toilet for a trash bin.”
The new system allows the Jail to set limits on flushing, adjust water runtimes and schedule fixture usage in cells and pods simultaneously.
