ILX Explore Failures in Management for IT Projects in 2013
(PRWEB UK) 10 January 2014 -- According to a survey conducted by cloud portfolio management provider, Innotas, half of all businesses had at least one IT project fail during the past twelve months, and the primary reason stated – according to 74% of respondents – was a lack of resources, reports CIO.com. This translates to warning signs that too many businesses have a shortage of employees with the skills required for success in project management positions.
According to experts, the level of supply and demand for project managers has stayed consistent, and growth within the role has also been stable, suggesting that the problem for the IT industry lies in training existing project managers rather than finding more people to fill the roles.
Shravan Goli, president of Dice.com, said: "The role has evolved over time, and there are a few trends that may be infringing on the project manager's core job description. The fundamental, core job description remains management and monitoring of project scope, communication between groups, motivating teams to drive delivery.”
Kevin Kern, Innotas CEO, said: "Project managers aren't just project-based, they're supervisors. They are managing solutions and applications, as well as managing the software developers, and there aren't enough developers, ever. So, project managers are being asked to take on so many responsibilities that their job descriptions get blurred.”
ILX, a global leading provider of Best Practice learning solutions, have responded to these findings and the implications for various industries in need of trained project managers. A spokesperson for the company said:
“Skilled project managers are often the single most important element of a successful project, and placing PMs not equipped with the extra skills required for these roles can thus have a detrimental effect on the business overall. The failure of projects in the IT industry over the last year could be attributed to many things, but additional project management training would help ease the ongoing problem with a lack of resources.”
