Job Growth Down in May over April, Report Says
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 30, 2017 -- Total nonfarm payroll employment reached 138,000 in May, a 21 percent decrease over April’s growth, according to preliminary numbers reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Economic Situation Report released on Friday, June 2, 2017.
“Total nonfarm payroll employment has averaged 181,000 a month over the past year”, said Jay Rollins, owner of JobsWeb.com, a leading job website. “Last month, employment growth dropped by 36,000 jobs or 21 percent, from 174,000 jobs reached in April. Job gains for the month of May occurred in heath care, professional and business services, and food services”.
Health care added 24,000 jobs in May, with large gains in ambulatory health care services (13,000) and hospitals (7,000). “On average, monthly employment gains in health care have decreased this year compared to last. In 2016, employment gains averaged 32,000 jobs a month. So far this year, employment has averaged 22,000 jobs a month,” said Rollins.
Mining added 7,000 jobs in May and 47,000 jobs since reaching a recent low point in October 2016.
Both professional and business services and food services and drinking places also experienced increases last month, adding 38,000 and 30,000 jobs respectively.
Overall, unemployment for the month reached 4.3 percent, while the number of unemployed persons reached 6.9 million. Since January, unemployment has declined by 0.5 percentage point, while the number of unemployed has decreased by 774,000.
