(PRWEB UK) 27 December 2013 -- Necklaces passed down from an aunt, charms collected since childhood and old ink pens are joining growing piles of never worn cufflinks and engagement rings from previous marriages stuffed in the back of our drawers.
Of 1,104 UK households surveyed by 62days.com, 90% revealed that they found it difficult to part with treasured keepsakes linked somehow with personal events – justifying keeping them due to an emotional connection, rather than seeing them as an opportunity to have a clear out and even make some additional money.
Yet of 21,000 such items uploaded to 62days there was an average offer in excess of £400, meaning that the average UK household is sitting on a mini cash goldmine and may have been for some time.
This holiday season at least 12 presents for friends and family, with the average spend on each being around £28.70, will have been bought according to research. Alongside the spend on gifts, at least £118.31 on Christmas Day entertaining will have also been spent meaning that for the big day alone a whopping £462.70 will have been spent by everyone in the UK.*
To claw back this festive expense, many people will see January as the perfect time to part with the old to pay for the new by selling unused and pre-loved treasure online and tapping in to that back-of-the-sofa gold mine. People can face 2014 knowing that Christmas has already been paid for.
The Behind the Sofa Charts, January 2014 revealed by 62days.com
1. Engagement rings from old relationships
2. 80’s style chandelier gold earrings ilk of Eastenders’ Pat Butcher
3. Silver candlesticks so old fashioned they’ve not graced a family Christmas since the 1960’s
4. Paintings from prominent artists lying covered in dust in the loft
5. Royal memorabilia
6. Antique and precious photo frames passed down by generations stood behind the more modern digital equivalent
7. Solid gold Rolex watches circa late 80’s Miami Vice
8. Antique dinner sets sporting old fashioned designs
9. Fountain Pens; Mont Blancs or vintage Parkers gifted at graduation
10. Unusual looking animal brooches featuring rubies and sapphires now seen as vintage pieces by the young and trendy ‘fash pack’
11. Pre-loved large furniture that just doesn’t sit right alongside today’s modern living; antique clocks, large gold gilded mirrors
12. Collar necklaces boasting intricate detailing too busy to pair with a flashy party outfit
62days.com’s Ron Korczak said, “The fear of parting with pre-loved treasure is a modern day phenomenon. We’re all guilty but in these increasingly expensive times we have to let the emotion go and sell smart.
“If you own valuable jewellery, antiques or other items that are never used or largely ignored then remember just one thing, memories stay forever but the bills keep coming,” he added.
