Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) October 10, 2013 -- In correlation with the opening of several other specialized departments, La Peer Health Systems recently opened a new department for the treatment of lipomas called the Lipoma Removal Center of Excellence. La Peer is an outpatient surgery center located in Los Angeles, and is world-renowned for its innovative procedures and state-of-the-art facilities.
“Lipoma treatment is different from most of our other procedures because it involves plastic and general surgery coming together,” said Dr. Liza Capiendo, who is a general and colorectal surgeon at La Peer and one of the two medical directors of the Lipoma Removal Center of Excellence. “We are excited to join forces and perfect our lipoma removal techniques, in order to offer the least invasive procedures with the best possible results.”
Dr. Capiendo will head the new department along with Jimmy S. Firouz, MD, a world-renowned plastic surgeon. Joining the two medical directors is a highly trained team of general and colorectal surgeons, including Eimand Firoozmand, MD; Gary Hoffman, MD; Allen Kamrava, MD; Yosef Nasseri, MD; and Stephen Yoo, MD, and a team of plastic and reconstructive surgeons, including Babak Azizzadeh, MD, FACS; Carlo Honrado, MD, FACS; Mehryar Taban, MD, FACS; and Guy Massry, MD.
Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that typically develop just beneath the surface of the skin, and appear as soft lumps. Most lipomas do not need to be removed unless the patient is unhappy with the appearance of the lipoma, in which case it can be removed for aesthetic purposes. However, certain lipoma symptoms may indicate the patient needs to have the lipoma removed for health reasons. Patients with lipomas that are painful to the touch, have increased in size over a short period of time and those whose lipomas have become infected or are producing a foul-smelling discharge may require surgery. Additionally, if a lipoma is making movement or function difficult, you may want to consider lipoma removal.
The board-certified plastic and general surgeons at the Lipoma Removal Center of Excellence specialize in minimally invasive techniques for lipoma removal, including lipoma removal surgery (excision), or in some cases, liposuction and steroid injections. These procedures are cutting-edge because they can be done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, rather than general anesthesia.
“We are very excited about the opening of this new center, and look forward to providing specialized treatment for our patients,” said Dr. Firouz, who is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at La Peer. “We have an excellent team of plastic and general surgeons who takes pride in leading the country with innovative medicine.”
Liza M. Capiendo, MD, is a board-certified colorectal and general surgeon. Her main clinical and research interests focus on the laparoscopic treatment of colon and rectal disorders. She has a special interest in the laparoscopic resection of gastrointestinal malignancies. Dr. Capiendo places special emphasis on the treatment of rectal disorders in women. Her expertise includes the treatment of pelvic floor disorders and the treatment of fecal incontinence.
Dr. Jimmy Firouz is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon practicing in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles. Through extensive training in both general and plastic/reconstructive surgery, Dr. Firouz blends his artistic talents with surgical precision to produce the best results possible. His specialties include cosmetic procedures of the face and body, including laser and endoscopic procedures, body contouring, facial rejuvenation and breast surgery.
