Lessons from My Patients: Grace within Suffering
(PRWEB) May 26, 2015 -- In “Doctor, What if it Were Your Mother?: Hope, Faith and Reason at the End of Life,” Dr. Victor Vogel channels 30 years of clinical research in oncology and his own life experiences dealing with suffering, pain, loss and the deaths of his family, friends and patients during his career of caring for people with cancer and other serious medical illnesses.
“I want to share the challenges I faced personally as my own mother died from acute leukemia while receiving the best possible medical care at one of the world’s finest hospitals,” Dr. Vogel said.
In his book, Dr. Vogel informs dying patients about how they can make rational decisions to ensure they receive the most compassionate and effective care, and encourages them to ask for palliative care when it is appropriate.
Dr. Vogel also exposes the flaws of terminal patient care within the healthcare system and shows clinicians how to address the very important spiritual, non-physical needs of dying patients through utilizing better doctor/patient communication.
“Futile therapy may create a difficult financial situation for both patients and their families,” Dr. Vogel said. “Many treatments are expensive and of minimal benefit, and do not improve the quality of the lives of patients who receive them.”
