LRQA Climate Change Expert Elected to ICAO Technical Task Force
(PRWEB UK) 18 February 2014 -- Madlen King, LRQA Global Head of Climate Change & Sustainability, has been successfully nominated to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) Global Market-Based Measure Technical Task Force (GMTF)
The GMTF’s scope of work is to:
• Recommend requirements and procedures for monitoring, reporting and verification of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international civil aviation.
• Assess and then recommend eligibility criteria for emission units and/or eligibility criteria for carbon credit programs and Market Based Measures (MBMs) whose emission units could be eligible for compliance use under a global MBM.
As a leading independent provider of assurance services including assessment, certification, validation, verification and training across a broad spectrum of standards and schemes, LRQA is well placed to bring deep technical insight into the complex world of emissions trading. King provided the verifiers' perspective in the design of the MRV rules for aviation under the EUETS and is also a founding member and Vice President of the Designated Operational Entities and Independent Entities Association (DIA) and a board member of IETA.
According to a Working Paper from the 38th ICAO Assembly, nearly 57 million jobs and $2.2 trillion in global GDP are supported by aviation. Aviation plays a key role in promoting sustainable development and should remain safe, affordable and accessible in order to ensure mobility on an equitable basis to all sectors of society.
With these benefits comes an impact on the environment, as King explained, “In 2012, aviation produced 689 million tonnes of CO2, or around 2% of the global total. I am delighted to be a part of the GMTF and devising MRV strategies to help the aviation sector address the global challenge of climate change and meet their challenging sustainability goals.”
The first meeting of the GMTF will be held 4-7 March in Washington DC. The full work of the GMTF will conclude in time for the finalisation of a global aviation MBM at the next ICAO Assembly in 2016, to be implemented by 2020.
