Martha McClellan Joins Hamel Family Wines
Sonoma, California (PRWEB) July 26, 2013 -- Hamel Family Wines (“HFW”) of Sonoma Valley announces that esteemed winemaker Martha McClellan has joined the winery as its Consulting Winemaker. Founded in 2006, HFW is a family winery that produces a limited quantity of wine from its organically farmed, estate vineyards.
“Simply put, Martha McClellan is one of the most renowned winemakers working today,” noted HFW’s founder George Hamel “More importantly, Martha is an even better person who shares our same passion for family and great wine. We’re thrilled to have her onboard to help us realize our dream of producing superior wine from the historic property.”
McClellan will work directly with HFW winemaker John Hamel and Viticulture Consultant Phil Coturri on crafting wines from HFW’s estate vineyards. She will also assist in designing HFW’s winery and caves adjacent to its estate house on Sonoma Highway in Sonoma Valley, due to open in Spring 2014.
"I am very excited to be included in the HFW project and to experience the care, passion and incredible attention to detail that has gone into it,” said McClellan. “The huge potential of the vineyards, when combined with the newly built state of the art winery, caves and hospitality area, can only help us exceed expectations for the wines we can make. It is both an honor and joy to be able to be part of it."
Robert Parker, the famed wine critic and founder of The Wine Advocate, described McClellan as having an “extraordinary resume, limitless talent, and a perfectionist, nearly obsessive, attitude toward making world-class wines.”
Beginning her winemaking career in Germany, McClellan remains the only American woman to have earned a degree in Oenology and Viticulture from Geisenheim University. McClellan served as associate winemaker for Napa Valley’s Harlan Estate for six vintages before taking the winemaking position at Sloan Estate in 2001. In 2006, she joined Checkerboard Vineyards on Diamond Mountain in Napa Valley. McClellan, and husband Bob Levy of Harlan Estate, also have their own wine project, Levy & McClellan.
