Mashable Launches New Australian Edition and Debuts Hero Unit Globally
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 28, 2014 -- Mashable, the leading media company for the Connected Generation, today launched a dedicated site for the Australian market, as well as a new feature, the Hero Unit, that elevates timely and breaking editorial content above the three columns to the top of the site.
Mashable Australia will be overseen by Jenni Ryall who joined the company in June as Australia Editor and is based in Sydney. The site is Mashable’s first country edition and will be followed in the coming months by Mashable UK, edited by Blathnaid Healy as UK Editor and Tim Chester as UK Deputy Editor.
“I’m very pleased with the content and important work that Jenni has been doing over the past few months, from reporting on the Hong Kong protests to Australian culture,” said Jim Roberts, Chief Content Officer and Executive Editor of Mashable. “I look forward to continuing the expansion of coverage in Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and internationally as a whole.”
Mashable also debuted its Hero Unit globally, which will highlight timely and breaking news stories from around the world. This new feature enables global Mashable editors to position stories at the top of the site so that the Connected Generation is able to find the most pressing content first.
“We’re always looking to bring the best of Mashable to the forefront of the site in a clean, beautiful and intuitive way,” said Robyn Peterson, Chief Technology Officer of Mashable. “The Mashable Hero Unit allows our editors to efficiently promote and place the important stories of the day at the center of the Mashable universe, and we’re excited that our growing editorial staff around the world will be able to easily access this tool to highlight their reporting.”
The Mashable homepage will also continue to use Mashable’s proprietary technology Velocity, which predicts and tracks what content is going viral next. Developed by Mashable’s in-house product team, Velocity scours the web collecting data around how people engage with content and feeds the information into an algorithm. It has been used by Mashable's editorial staff since 2012, but has recently been brought to brands through agreements with media agencies 360i and MEC.
