Medical Residents to Be Honored for H.E.R.O. Award in Anticipation of March “Match” Month
San Clemente, CA & Wilmington, DE (PRWEB) February 20, 2014 -- Today, Medelita, a company changing the way that healthcare professionals think about their professionalism and their uniform by upgrading the traditional one in every conceivable way, and DuPont™ Teflon®, a company that brings world-class science and engineering to innovative products and materials, announced the inaugural Honoring Excellent Resident Observations, or H.E.R.O. award.
“The Right Fit” campaign highlights the personal sacrifices, long hours and educational commitment during a medical resident’s professional life. A Medelita embroidered lab coat and scrub set will be won by 100 residents. One H.E.R.O. winner, following a community peer vote of the top 10 and the final discretion of a judging panel, will take home a $25,000 honorarium to decrease medical debt. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates this debt to be over $160,000 for each graduating medical student.
The 100 winners are to be featured on http://www.medelita.com/therightfit. Damon Kuehl, M.D. vice chair of emergency medicine, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and emergency medicine program director, lectures and speaks nationally about ways to motivate residents.
“Historically, we as an industry have done a poor job of honoring the great work residents do and are a bit behind other professions. Sometimes we recognize good patient care experiences with a coffee card or gift certificate for dinner,” Kuehl, who sits on the judging panel, noted. “We have to change the culture and recognize great work. I am not aware of any major award of this size that humanizes healthcare like the H.E.R.O. award. The peer-nomination creates an outstanding longitudinal experience for building a culture of recognition beyond plaques and gift certificates."

“Historically, we as an industry have done a terrible job of honoring residents and are a bit behind. Sometimes we recognize good patient care experiences with a coffee card or gift certificate for dinner,” Kuehl, who sits on the judging panel, noted. “We have to change the culture and appreciate hard work. I am not aware of any major award of this size that humanizes healthcare like the H.E.R.O. award. The peer-nomination creates an outstanding longitudinal experience for building a culture of recognition beyond plaques and gift certificates."
Medelita founder Lara Manchik-Francisco, a licensed physician assistant that spent 10 years practicing in level 1 trauma centers, said, “The H.E.R.O. award was created to recognize excellent residents. They are in a transitional period and going through a time that includes uncertainty, as well as debt. At Medelita we are proud to highlight the professionalism that is synergistic with a long-term commitment to education and to excellent patient care. The H.E.R.O. award is intended to recognize the best of the best.”
Michael A. Gisondi, M.D., Residency Program Director and Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Northwestern University - Feinberg School of Medicine, is also a judge. Dr. Gisondi said, “Many in the millennial generation are accustomed to being recognized for ‘just being part of the team’ and not always for winning. We need to engage and motivate this generation of residents for success in an entirely new way. The Medelita H.E.R.O. award will recognize 100 residents who demonstrate outstanding care for their patients despite the challenges of modern residency training in an era of unprecedented healthcare reform. There is a lot of change happening that requires innovative thinking on the part of both medical educators and physicians-in-training.”
