Mentice Simulators teach life-saving skills for acute care surgery

Trauma is the main cause of death in individuals under 44 years of age in the US and accounts for over 40 million emergency room visits per year. Increased use of endovascular treatment methods, where small wires and catheters are threaded through a patient’s blood vessels, has the potential to offer great advantages in vascular trauma over traditional methods.
In the past, endovascular simulators have been successfully used to teach endovascular procedures to specialist physicians and medical teams. A recent study in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery now shows that the same training approach can also be applied to acute care surgeons. The surgeons used a simulator to practice the potentially life-saving REBOA (resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta) technique, in which a large balloon is inserted through the blood vessels into the lower aorta and inflated to prevent further blood loss. After the endovascular simulator course, significant improvements in procedural time and knowledge were achieved, regardless of the level of previous endovascular experience.
