Millennials Mean Business - PsychTests’ Study Indicates That Millennials Are Determined To Prove Their Worth
Montreal, Canada (PRWEB) January 16, 2016 -- Stereotypes aren’t just damaging; like a tenacious weed, they take time to die. Millennials have been labeled as self-entitled, arrogant, and immature, and purportedly coddled and glorified by their “helicopter” parents. But to what degree is that true? Research by PsychTests reveals that Millennials are not afraid to push themselves to achieve lofty goals, to work hard, and to take on difficult challenges.
Collecting data from 1,035 people who took their Ambition Test, researchers at PsychTests looked at the differences between Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers in terms of level of aspiration, persistence, and sense of self-efficacy.
The PsychTests' study reveals that while Millennials lagged a little behind the other two generations on some factors related to ambition, the potential of these youngsters should not be underestimated.
• 73% of Millennials consistently look for ways to improve their performance and their efficiency, compared to 81% of Generation X and 86% of Baby Boomers.
• 55% of Millennials strive to achieve top honors at school/work (e.g. honor roll, Employee of the Month), compared to 61% of Generation X and 69% of Baby Boomers.
• 75% of Millennials set high standards for themselves at work, compared to 81% of Generation X and 79% of Baby Boomers.
• 78% of Millennials state that they are very motivated to improve themselves, whether it’s a matter of becoming a better person or turning their weaknesses into strengths - compared to 82% of Generation X and 69% of Baby Boomers.
• 81% of Millennials believe that they can achieve whatever they set their mind to, compared to 83% of Generation X and 76% of Baby Boomers.
• 59% of Millennials rate themselves as being more ambitious than their peers, compared to 49% of Generation X and 35% of Baby Boomers.
• 74% of Millennials were encouraged by their parents to set their goals high, compared to 52% of Generation X and 45% of Baby Boomers.
• 55% of Millennials had a role model growing up, compared to 44% of Generation X and 52% of Baby Boomers.
When they start to doubt their ability to accomplish something...
• 67% of Millennials compel themselves to push through their self-doubt, compared to 66% of Generation X and 48% of Baby Boomers.
• 14% admit that their self-doubt tends to holds them back from moving forward, compared to 13% of Generation X and 14% of Baby Boomers.
• 19% indicate that they actually seldom experience self-doubt, compared to 21% of Generation X and 38% of Baby Boomers.
When obstacles get in the way of their goals...
• 41% of Millennials take action and create a plan to help them overcome the obstacles, compared to 34% of Generation X and 45% of Baby Boomers.
• 48% take a temporary break from their goal, compared to 55% of Generation X and 45% of Baby Boomers.
• 11% admit that they get discouraged and choose to quit, compared to 11% of Generation X and 10% of Baby Boomers.
When a goal isn’t progressing as quickly as expected…
• 16% of Millennials indicated that they simply keep at it, and refuse to stop until their goal is achieved, compared to 8% of Generation X and less than 1% of Baby Boomers.
• 59% change their approach, compared to 69% of Generation X and 76% of Baby Boomers.
• 20% put their goal aside temporarily, compared to 20% of Generation X and 21% of Baby Boomers.
• 5% quit, compared to 3% of Generation X and 3% of Baby Boomers.
In response to a hypothetical work evaluation in which their performance is rated as “Satisfactory”…
• 20% of Millennials state that they would be happy with this rating, compared to 16% of Generation X and 17% of Baby Boomers.
• 48% admit that they would be a little surprised, and would try to improve, compared to 45% of Generation X and 38% of Baby Boomers.
• 32% would not be happy with this appraisal and would strive to work harder, compared to 39% of Generation X and 45% of Baby Boomers.
“One can argue that Millennials’ hopeful and determined nature is a case of idealism,” explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “Some have just started out in the workforce, so they’re eager to prove themselves – which could also mean that at some point, they will be blindsided by the reality of what it’s like to be out there in the ‘real world’.”
“What many people fail to realize, however, is that Millennials are not strangers to hard work and pressure. They have to be able to balance school, a job, extracurricular activities, and relationships, all while paying off student debts they’ve collected along the way. It’s not just their parents who are pushing them to achieve their highest potential – they are pushing themselves as well, often even harder. And for those who think that Millennials are arrogant and plagued with a bloated sense of self-importance, our research reveals that less than half of them rated their confidence as strong - compared to 51% of Generation X and 66% of Baby Boomers. Yet, many members of this alleged ‘Me Me Me Generation’ would let doubt stop them. All-in-all, chances are that when they enter the workforce, an attitude shift happens, and they gain a new perspective on life and their role in the world. One thing is sure: They are determined to show their critics that they should not be counted out.”
