Milton Hershey School Finishes Mock Trial Season No. 5 in the State
HERSHEY, Pa. (PRWEB) April 21, 2016 -- Milton Hershey School’s® Mock Trial Team finished its history-making season ranked fifth out of 317 teams in the state of Pennsylvania. The team won the school's first District Championship, Regional Semifinals and Regional Championship before advancing to the State Finals of the Pennsylvania Mock Trial Competition.
“Our students have been fearless in their poise and execution,” said David Curry, the Law, Public Safety & Security teacher and mock trial coach at MHS. “The team experienced unprecedented achievement while also dealing with challenges along the way. The experience of this season and the lessons learned from it will undoubtedly prepare these students for success long after their time at Milton Hershey School.”
During the first round of State Finals, Milton Hershey School’s plaintiff team defeated the defense team of Region 3 Champion, Huntington Area High School. Contributing to the team’s victory, senior Franchesca Ramirez was named best advocate and junior Chiemela Anyanwu was named best witness.
Milton Hershey School missed advancing to the Final Four by one point during the second round after a solid performance by its defense team against defending State Champion Central High School’s plaintiff team. Senior Leila Asemani won the best advocate award while junior Josi Daugherty was named best witness.
The Pennsylvania Mock Trial Competition is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. Each mock trial has a strong educational emphasis and provides a forum for students to learn about the law, the legal system and court procedures, as well as improve their basic skills such as listening, reasoning and thinking on their feet.
Six-member student teams argue both sides of a case in a courtroom before a judge. Students take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, plaintiffs and defendants, with lawyers and community leaders serving as jurors. These juries decide the winner in each trial based on the presentation of the case and the team’s ability to follow court rules.
Members of the MHS Mock Trial Team participate in the Law, Public Safety & Security pathway of the school’s award-winning Career and Technical Education program. The CTE program pushes students to explore career options and then accelerates their growth by giving them tailor-made instruction with the ability to work in their chosen career path. Students are able to choose from 11 different career pathways to better prepare them for future success.
