National Kiwifruit Day is Saturday, December 21
Los Alamitos, CA (PRWEB) December 16, 2013 -- Celebrate National Kiwifruit Day on Saturday, December 21 with the “Queen of Kiwi.” Fifty-two years ago, Frieda Caplan, founder of Frieda’s Specialty Produce Company, gained international recognition for being the first to import the “Chinese gooseberry” from New Zealand, marketing it as the Kiwifruit, after the country’s fuzzy flightless bird. By the early 1970s, New Zealand Kiwifruit was catching on. Caplan soon convinced California growers to plant the fruit, and a new global economy was born. Soon California had more than 700 Kiwifruit growers.
Caplan’s marketing abilities were recognized worldwide after her success in introducing and promoting the Kiwifruit, earning her the title of “Queen of Kiwi.” Caplan’s influence extends beyond the Kiwifruit. Her ability to create consumer demand for unusual foods has helped Caplan and her daughters make success stories out of many more items, including Sunchokes®, Sugar Snap Peas™, Hothouse Cucumbers, Habanero Chiles and Kiwano® Melons. Frieda’s Inc. has introduced more than 200 fruits and vegetables to America.
