NCWM to Hold Special Session on Credit Card Skimmers
Lincoln, Nebraska (PRWEB) December 20, 2015 -- Credit card skimmers that steal credit card information are being discovered in gas pumps all across the nation, putting consumers at risk. The National Conference on Weights and Measures will hold a special session at their January conference to discuss investigative and enforcement techniques to rein in the rising problem.
Criminals install credit card skimmers in fuel dispensers without the knowledge of the retailer. When customers pay at the pump with credit or debit cards, the skimmer steals the customer’s credit or debit card information, including PIN numbers. In a recent polling of states, NCWM learned that skimmers have been found in gas pumps in all regions of the country. In some states, the weights and measures officials are conducting special inspections and teaming up with law enforcement agencies to find these devices. Weights and measures inspectors are already familiar with and have access to fuel dispensers within their jurisdictions.
The meeting in January will include presentations by state weights and measures officials and federal agents who have been directly involved in investigations and prosecutions of criminals responsible for installing these devices. The audience, largely weights and measures officials from all over the country, will learn how these devices are installed, how to identify them and what actions to take when they are found. Industry members representing petroleum marketers and manufacturers of fuel dispensers will also be in attendance.
This session will be on January 13, 2016 at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter in conjunction with the 2016 NCWM Interim Meeting. “This will be very valuable information for the weights and measures community and the consumers that they protect,” said NCWM Chairman Jerry Buendel. “Inspectors already open the cabinets of retail fuel dispensers as part of routine inspections so they are valuable partners in the effort to combat credit card skimmers.”
The National Conference on Weights and Measures is a professional nonprofit association of state and local weights and measures officials, federal agencies, manufacturers, retailers and consumers. NCWM has developed national weights and measures standards since 1905. The organization brings the right interests together to keep pace with innovative advancements in the marketplace.
