New Diet May Lower Risk of Kidney Stones
(PRWEB) June 02, 2014 -- Comprised of tiny crystals in the urine, kidney stones are small, hard deposits that form in a patient’s kidneys. As they pass through the body, these stones can cause intense pain in patients. Though kidney stones are relatively common, a new study suggests they may be prevented through a specialized diet.
Though it is no surprise that certain foods can increase the risk of kidney stones, a new study suggests that the popular DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) could lower a patient’s risk of developing kidney stones.
The DASH eating plan focuses on fruits, vegetables, and fat-free products. Low in saturated fats, cholesterol, and total fat, the DASH diet is rich in whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, and seeds. It also contains less sweets and sugars than other diet plans. Though initially aimed at patients with high diabetes or blood pressure, the DASH diet has been shown to be effective as a preventative measure for kidney stones.
“This new study could have a profound impact on kidney stone prevention,” said Kia Michel, MD, of Comprehensive Urology. “For years, urologists have known the benefits of a low-oxalate diet or a diet rich in calcium. But this new diet could allow millions of patients to avoid the pain of dealing with kidney stones.”
During the study, researchers studied two groups of participants. One group followed the DASH diet while the second group followed a low-oxalate diet, a well-known diet for preventing kidney stones. After eight weeks, the researchers studied the urinary composition of participants in both groups. Their findings suggested that the DASH diet could be a new and novel way of avoid kidney stones.
“According to these findings, the DASH diet could be a good alternative to a traditional low-oxalate diet,” said Dr. Michel. “Other ways patients can reduce their risk of kidney stones is by staying hydrated and eating foods rich in calcium.”
