New Life House Announces the Reintroduction of their Parent Guide Program
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 12, 2014 -- New Life House operates on the premise that no one does this alone. Since 1985 they have been offering hope and solutions for parents with struggling sons. Through their family style, community living model, they have been in the business of giving life a second chance to families and finds that it always comes down to the parents being open to recovery as well.
Just as there is a program for addicts and alcoholics, addiction is a family disease best addressed by their Parent Guide Program coupled with Alcoholics Anonymous’ sister program of Al Anon. New Life House recognizes increased verifiable results of the young men in their homes when their parents take full advantage of these two components on an ongoing basis.
During the Parent Guide module at New Life House, parents learn that addiction is not anyone’s fault. It does not care where you come from, how much money you have, what color or religion you are, it is a universal primary complex brain disorder that affects one in every twelve adults (NCADD, Inc.). The Parent Guide Program is specifically geared towards the new parent. Putting a son in sober living is an emotional and challenging experience, it helps to have a calm, focused point person to act as a mentor. Alumni parents shepherd newer moms and dads through all aspects of the sober living house and are available 24/7 to answer phone calls, act as sounding boards and share their experience, strength and hope.
New Life House stresses parent participation in Al Anon as it offers the family a platform where they can address enmeshed behaviors that contributed to an unhealthy family system and begin to change these so that everyone can heal. Addicts have been wreaking havoc with their families, sometimes for many years, and families have played their part in the co-dependent web that addiction weaves. Al Anon shows parents that they are not responsible for their son’s addiction and that letting go with love is the best thing they can do to aid in the recovery process.
Living with an addict has far reaching consequences for all. A parent is worried for their son’s safety, so they coddle him. They become angry, so they lash out and make threats they either don’t intend to carry out, or they cannot. For every different situation there are as many reactions. The Parent Guide program has been put into place as a buffer, so that parents run ideas by their mentor without reacting emotionally and stopping an already volatile situation from becoming worse. Al Anon teaches parents that responding is better than reacting. The out-of-town parent is also a vital part of the Parent Guide Program and is kept in close contact, receiving weekly updates from the house and visiting according to their schedules.
New Life House offers a unique family-style approach to drug and alcohol dependence and family stays involved throughout the entire process, through the parent Guide Program, attending weekly parent meetings, dinners, Al Anon participation and receiving weekly updates. Their sober community has grown exponentially over almost thirty years to include hundreds of active sober members and families. New Life House is honored to be able to give young men and their families a second chance at life.
