One-Legged MMA Fighter Signs with XFS
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) May 12, 2014 -- Arguably the most inspirational story in all of Mixed Martial Arts will be writing another historic chapter in San Diego.
Matt Betzold (4-3), undefeated at Flyweight (3-0), has signed a six-fight contract with San Diego-based MMA promotion company, XFS (Xplode Fight Series).
Betzold, the current World Fighting Federation Flyweight Champion, will make his XFS debut on Saturday, May 17, at the San Pasqual Reservation Center on 16760 Paradise Mountain Road in Valley Center, CA. For ticket information call 760-743-4999 or log on to http://www.xplodefightseries.com.
"It feels really good knowing that Xplode Fight Series sees my potential and talent," said Betzold. "I have always wanted a multi-fight deal so that I can prove my skill and get to the next level."
"Fighting for XFS will help me get to the UFC (which is my ultimate goal) because I'll fight more consistently, which will give fans a chance to see my talent and passion for Mixed Martial Arts."
Fighting is very familiar territory for Betzold, who's left leg was amputated at age 5 after consuming a piece of poisoned candy. As a result, Betzold began fighting to merely stay alive, which eventually served as the precursor to fighting in Mixed Martial Arts.
After being taunted by kids in elementary school for having one leg, Betzold started fighting in an effort to defend himself from bullying. And then, after a few fights in the school yard, he had taken a liking to fighting and years later, at age 17, decided to train in Mixed Martial Arts.
"That's how it all started," he said. "And now people use my story as inspiration and it makes me feel like a superhero and gives me strength like you wouldn't believe."
Fight promoter Gregg Sharp, owner of XFS (Xplode Fight Series), is humbled by Betzold's incredible story and is eager to help him achieve his life-long dream.
"Our relationship with Matt provides a positive impact and message to all physically impaired fighters," said Sharp. "We (XFS) believe that your pursuit of greatness can and will be embraced with us as an organization and we are very excited about working with higher-caliber developing talent like Matt."
Betzold is already a nationally-known grappler, and in 2012 and 2013 he was a part of the USA FILA MMA team which took 1st Place at the FILA World Championships. He was also the only American fighter to win the gold medal on two separate occasions.
Originally from Phoenix, AZ, Betzold now makes his home in Sacramento, CA, and is currently training with "Team Alpha Male," founded and operated by #1 Ranked UFC Bantamweight Fighter and former WEC Bantamweight Champion, Urijah "The California Kid" Faber.
"Urijah Faber is one of the nicest guys I have ever met," said Betzold. "He accepted me wholeheartedly into his gym and they (Team Alpha Male) treat me like family and it's truly an honor and a dream come true to be training with them."
