One Revolution's 2013 Who’s Your Hero Bike Tour to Highlight Local Stories of Resilience
Park City, UT (PRWEB) July 25, 2013 -- There are heroes with stories of resilience, integrity, and strength in every community – and One Revolution Foundation is on a mission to find them.
This fall, Chris Waddell, a 13-time Paralympic medalist and Hall of Famer, will lead a team of cyclists from Seattle to San Diego on a quest to find heroes who help guide kids through the tough terrain of childhood. The 2013 Who’s Your Hero Tour will start September 1 and end October 31, and will make stops in Seattle, the Portland area, San Francisco, and San Diego.
Along the way, Waddell will take One Revolution’s Nametags™ Education Program into local schools, veterans’ hospitals, and other facilities that serve the disabled communities. During those stops, Waddell will highlight people who’ve made choices to stand up for what they believe in and have demonstrated strength in the face of struggle. There is a limited number of presentation dates still available on the West Coast stops. To nominate a hero or schedule a Nametags™ presentation, send stories and requests to info(at)one-revolution(dot)org.
The Nametags™ Education Program is designed for students in third grade and above. Children learn that they have the power to make choices about how they are perceived – the “nametags” they wear. The overriding message is that in the face of adversity, they can choose resilience. Nametags™ is also done for corporations, where employees are encouraged to embrace diversity and question their assumptions about disability. “Heroes are an integral part of community, and community contributes to resilience,” said Waddell, the first paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro. “No matter who we are, we will face challenges and adversity. Our youth need to understand that when they face struggles, they have choices in how they respond.”
In San Francisco, the One Revolution team will meet up with riders from the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) on October 11 as part of CAF’s Dodge Million Dollar Challenge. Together, the teams will finish the ride in San Diego on October 18. Nametags™ presentations and visits with veterans will then resume in Southern California. Sponsors for the Who’s Your Hero Tour are National Ability Center, Peace & Sport, and Ride Design.
The One Revolution team is adding a special weekend ride through Napa Valley on Oct. 4-6 to support the organization’s mission. Participants will ride with Waddell and team through scenic wine country and share in their goal to live life to the fullest. For information and reservations, call (801) 510-9684.
And the journey won’t stop there. Next year, Waddell plans to ride coast-to-coast on his hand-cycle to continue raising awareness and donations for One Revolution. More stories of local heroes will be collected along the way, and will form the basis of a future documentary. Waddell’s 2009 summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro was captured in the award-winning film “1 Revolution.”
“Our message is simple,” he said. “It’s not what happens to you. It’s what you do with what happens to you.”
