Parents as Teachers Joins White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics “Call to Action”
St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) October 15, 2015 -- Parents as Teachers today joined nearly 150 public and private sector organizations answering the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics’ 25th Anniversary “Call to Action” to help expand and support educational outcomes and opportunities for the Latino community from cradle-to-career.
President Barack Obama officially announced the “Commitments to Action” at The White House, stating that a collective investment of nearly $340 million will build on - and accelerate - federal, state, and local investments in high-quality education for the Latino community.
Parents as Teachers’ Commitment to Action focuses on the critical area of early childhood learning. Titled “Impactful Parenting for Successful Hispanic Children,” the program will expand on and improve the quality of home visiting services to Hispanic families.
The St. Louis-based non-profit organization is making a commitment to raise $250,000 to translate its educational materials that address special needs families, teen parenting, and young dads and moms into Spanish. Parents as Teachers will also add at least four bilingual trainers to coach professional parent educators that primarily assist Hispanic families, as well as a Project Director of Hispanic Outreach and Impact to promote the commitment throughout the Parents as Teachers affiliate network serving Hispanic communities.
“This commitment will further expand Parents as Teachers services to more Hispanic families,” said Scott Hippert, President and CEO, Parents as Teachers. “Parents as Teachers already offers its core curricula in Spanish. By adding critical resources that target specific familial situations and provide group-based support, we will soon have the ability to broaden the outreach and expertise of home visiting professionals that primarily serve Hispanic communities, providing much-needed support to the youngest and fastest-growing minority community in the country.”
During the first year of the commitment, Parents as Teachers will partner with national organizations and affiliates that support Hispanic communities to offer a more robust home visiting experience with an emphasis on family engagement, parent-child interaction and development-centered parenting.
