ProLiteracy Hosts First Syracuse Hackathon Related to Adult Literacy
Syracuse, New York (PRWEB) August 20, 2014 -- On September 13-14, 2014, ProLiteracy will gather technology experts, designers, programmers, and engineers to devise innovative solutions aimed at increasing access to literacy for adult learners around the world. The event is co-organized by the Syracuse Tech Garden.
The hackathon aims to make advances in the field of technology while supporting the education of adults all over the world through finding solutions related to international non-literacy; literacy program waiting lists; health literacy; incarceration and recidivism; and career- and college-readiness.
During the day on September 13 and 14, participants will work at ProLiteracy’s headquarters on the Near West Side of Syracuse and present their ideas on the evening of September 14 to a panel of judges. Cash prizes will be awarded for the most innovative and useful solutions.
“There is a great demand in the adult literacy field for technological tools that improve access to and implementation of literacy materials and programs,” says Kevin Morgan, president and CEO of ProLiteracy. “ProLiteracy and its publishing division, New Readers Press, believe the impact of technology on adult literacy and basic education cannot be underestimated, and we are excited to launch what we hope will be a continued conversation about this.”
“Events like these spark momentum for more innovation by bringing the community together to solve real-world problems,” says Seth Mulligan, vice president of innovation services at the Syracuse Tech Garden.
The event will kick off at 10 a.m. on September 13 with a presentation on the current state of adult literacy around the world. The hackathon begins immediately after. Registration is free.
