Recent News of Detroit Car Insurance Rates Spell Disaster for Drivers
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) August 09, 2013 -- Car insurance rates in Michigan are among the highest in the nation, and rates are even higher within city limits according to Fox Business (7.22.13). The inflated cost of car insurance has complicated legal roots, but car accident attorney Thomas Stroble says it can be solved – and that it disproportionally affects the city's poorest residents.
Michigan is one of 12 states that use a “no fault” personal injury protection (PIP) system, in which all drivers must carry car insurance and blame is not assigned following an accident. In such states insurance rates are typically determined by where a driver lives, and thus how likely they are to be in an accident – meaning that motorists who live within city limits face the highest premiums.
“We have a system where insurance companies have nearly carte blanche in setting rates,” said Stroble, the founder of Stroble Law and a dedicated advocate for accident victims. “The result is that poorer families can't afford car insurance at all. They're locked out of getting any help.”
According to voter education non-profit Publius, the high insurance rates also correspond to low voter registration and low voter turnout.
“Michigan insurers use the address where you registered to vote to determine how high your rates are,” Stoble said. “That means many people register at a false address outside the city, making it hard to actually turn out to vote, or they don't register at all.”
“There are solutions,” Stroble said. “Right now insurance companies can pump the system for higher profit margins. Limiting how much they can make would bring down costs without undermining benefits.”
Stroble says anyone injured in an accident should talk to a lawyer.
