Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency Celebrates Recent Family Development Credential Graduates
Salisbury, NC (PRWEB) March 24, 2014 -- The Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency (SRCAA) celebrated the graduation of its second Family Development Credential (FDC) Program class. The FDC focuses on family development from a strength-based approach and provides new knowledge and skills to help families become self-reliant. The seventeen members of the graduating class included members of the agency's early childhood education (Head Start) and Youth and Family Services departments.
Some of the core principles of family development include; 1) all people and all families have strengths, 2) all families need and deserve support how much and what kind of support varies throughout life and 3) most successful families are not dependent on long-term public support. FDC trains family workers to empower their clients. Research has shown that empowerment is not something anyone can do for someone else, nor can it be forced. Empowerment occurs when people set their own goals. The role of helping systems, whether family, friends, or agencies, is to support that goal not to set it for the person.
Over the last two years SRCAA staff has been completing the training to receive the Family Development Credential with the goal of implementing the strength-based approach throughout the entire agency. SRCAA has 25 family and youth development specialists that serve over 900 individuals and families annually.
The graduation ceremony was held on February 24, 2014 at the Rowan Public Library. This year's graduating class included; Cassandra Allen, Lucilitia Ancheta, April Moore, Audra Bowden, Beverly Bauer, Kay Boland, Denita Caldwell, Joann Diggs, Sabrina Gaither, Linda Hamrick, Pamela Kirkland, Linda McCaskill, Pamela Mitchell, Joyce Ray, Angela Robinson, Shenita Russell, and Phyllis Spencer.
