Saving Lives and Creating Jobs for the Visually Impaired
Marcy, NY (PRWEB) March 04, 2016 -- Recognizing a need to help combat the opioid epidemic facing many communities, Mountainside Medical Equipment has developed an Intranasal Naloxone Administration Kit based on feedback from law enforcement, first responders, and addiction treatment centers. In an effort to provide support for local agencies, a partnership has been developed with CABVI to assemble the kit contents helping to provide employment for the blind and visually impaired. Once assembled, Mountainside Medical Equipment adds the lifesaving medication Naloxone to the kits, readying them for distribution.
Opioid use has been steadily rising over the last decade resulting in an increase in related fatalities. No longer limited to illegal drugs, this epidemic has spread into all communities from the abuse of prescription painkillers such as Vicodin® and Oxycodone®. The use of Intranasal Naloxone in the event of opioid overdose temporarily reverses the effect of opioids until medical attention can be provided. In a survey of over 150 agencies, over 85% of respondents indicated that they have seen a sharp rise in the rate of opioid abuse and nearly all indicated they expected to order additional Naloxone Kits within the year.
Mountainside Medical Equipment recognizes the positive impact that organizations like the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired have on the community. This partnership will help to create jobs at CABVI and provide life-saving supplies to New York State agencies. "I'm very excited to be teaming up with CABVI on this project. They are an excellent organization that has helped so many people with all the great services they provide," explained Martin Zarnock, Jr., Vice President at Mountainside Medical Equipment. "I am very proud that they are helping us to assemble these Naloxone kits, which have a very important purpose in helping save lives by reversing the effects of overdose from prescription drugs like Vicodin®, Oxycodone® and illicit drugs like heroin. We distribute Naloxone Kits to law enforcement and drug treatment centers who work with people who are struggling with addiction, so they can get the help they need."
After successfully launching the project last month, Mountainside Medical Equipment is readying additional kit components to be sent over to CABVI for assembly.
