Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation Rolls Out 2014 Education Platform
Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) January 31, 2014 -- The Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) Foundation unveiled its education programs for 2014 that include an emphasis in online programming and webinars. The educational programs are designed to educate professionals who diagnose and teach children with sensory processing disorder (SPD). SPD is a neurological disorder that disrupts the way an individual processes and responds to sensations. A person with SPD usually has difficulty with social interactions, emotion and behavior regulation, and/or motor performance. SPD affects daily activities and relationships impairing quality of life and includes the sensory challenges associated with attention deficit disorders (ADD and ADHD), autistic spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, emotional and behavioral disorders, learning disorders, and other developmental issues.
The 2014 line-up of educational offerings includes both online programs and in-person workshops and conferences. The new online programs consist of vido-taped sessions and live-streaming webinars including three new All-STAR Lectures and two additional programs in the Assessment Series which help clinicians master the use of standardized assessments for developing a treatment plan and measuring progress. Also new for the first time online are Advanced Topics for the SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding developed by Dr. Kay Toomey. The first three topics available are Feeding the 6-16 Month Old Child, Helping Children Transition Off Supplemental Tube Feedings and Children with Gastroesophageal Reflux.
Also coming in 2014 is a video-taped series of the highlights from the International 3S Symposium, SPD: Strategies, Science, and Success held in Charlotte, North Carolina in October 2013, with talks from notable experts in the field of SPD including Dr. Lucy Jane Miller, Dr. Kay Toomey, Dr. Stephen Camarata, Dr. Zachary Rosenthal and Paula Aquila.
These new online programs add additional content to current online webinars, courses and symposia including the highlights from the14th International Symposium and courses which provide in depth information about SPD, the subtypes of SPD, administration and scoring of the Miller Assessment for Preschoolers (MAP) and FirstSTEp (Screening Test for Evaluating Preschoolers).
In addition to online courses, the Foundation is conducting several in-person live workshops and conferences in 2014. The SOS Approach to Feeding Workshops will be presented in Indianapolis, Seattle and Little Rock, and provide instruction on assessing and treating feeding difficulties and weight/growth problems in children by Dr. Kay A. Toomey. The Foundation’s 17th International 3S Symposium, SPD: Strategies, Science, and Success will be held on November 7-8, 2014 in Tempe, Arizona. Also, the new GOAL (Goal-Oriented Assessment of Lifeskills) Workshops will be conducted in over twenty cities this year. The GOAL is an innovative new evaluation of functional motor abilities needed for daily living in children ages 7 to 17. The Foundation continues to host its unique Intensive Mentorship: Clinical Reasoning in Intervention program for professionals at its headquarters outside of Denver, Colorado.
“We are excited about the programs that will be available to therapists and individuals seeking in-depth and accurate information to help manage sensory challenges,” said Executive Director Sheryl Benjamin. “The line-up of topics is excellent and the speakers are among the best in the field.”
