SHMsoft, Inc. Offers FreeEed as Pre-packaged Open Source Software for eDiscovery
Houston, TX (PRWEB) May 02, 2014 -- SHMsoft, a leader in open source software for eDiscovery, is pleased to announce its latest offering - a complete eDiscovery application, with all component pre-installed and integrated together. The use of the software becomes easy as popcorn, and for this reason the application is often called “FreeEed popcorn virtual machine.” Here a corn is a lawsuit, the VirtualBox is a holder, and FreeEed is a popcorn maker. This is illustrated in the slides on SlideShare here.
The software can be downloaded from the FreeEed web site, is completely free and can be used for any purpose, commercial or educational.
There are about 1 million lawyers and law firms in the US, and about half of them have never used eDiscovery. Many of those who have used eDiscovery are still looking for free or low-cost alternatives. FreeEed has great features for both new and experienced users. Its packaging into a virtual machine application is very convenient. One can process a matter in one virtual machine, then store it for as long as needed. One can bring the data back (warm up the popcorn), together with the software, as needed, at any time. One can process the second matter in a second virtual machine, and so on. Different processing can be applied to different sets of documents, and one can also erase the virtual machine, in a guaranteed manner. The matters never mingle, and this helps avoid ethical problems.
While the software can be used on one’s workstation for smaller eDiscovery cases, with the data size in the gigabytes, its underlying technology is Big Data and Hadoop, and it can scale up to terabytes. For this, one takes more of these virtual machine and combines them together, using the FreeEed cluster builder provided with the software. Since every license is free, this process is scalable, and the total cost of ownership is kept low.
The CEO of SHMsoft Mark Kerzner said, “Our software is getting popular with large and small law firms, government agencies, enterprises, and developers learning Big Data. We will keep working on it software, making FreeEed more user friendly, and adding data collection and predictive analytics capabilities.“
Shane Gilette of Microsoft said, “Microsoft looks forward to working with SHMsoft on an upcoming eDiscovery opportunity and hopefully many others, by using our Azure cloud, which is a great fit for Hadoop applications. We look forward to a mutually rewarding partnership.”
John Kreisa, vice president of strategic marketing at Hortonworks said, “As the provider of the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), the industry’s only 100-percent open source Hadoop distribution, we believe in helping drive IT innovation entirely in the open. SHMsoft’s FreeEed is based completely on open source and we welcome the opportunity to certify FreeEed on HDP to further expand the Hadoop ecosystem, and better serve our customers with a big data application for the eDiscovery market.”
