Short On Space? Hang Your Garden
Kelowna, BC (PRWEB) May 01, 2014 -- Over the years hanging baskets have evolved. Segler’s family-owned Kelowna garden centre, now in its 33rd year, is seeing an increase in demand for hanging baskets in Kelowna because of housing trends.
“In Kelowna, hanging baskets and planters are becoming more popular because people have smaller backyards or condo patios, but still want some colourful flowers in that sitting area,” says manager, Kirsten Segler.
As the choice of hanging baskets is changing every year, The Greenery is trying to keep up with the current trends. No longer are people looking for single variety baskets like the well adapted European mini ivy geranium introduced by The Greenery 30 years ago! Due to a changing lifestyle and smaller gardens, more people are trending towards mixed hanging baskets and pre-planted planters. The Greenery will be increasing the production of those items by 30% while reducing mono (single variety) hanging baskets accordingly. Their production of mixed 12" hanging baskets with 25 different plants will reach over 3500 out of their total production of 20,000 hanging baskets.
The other trend is "less work" so the demand for fully blooming plants that “shatter” is diminishing. Shattering is a term given to plants that have a tendency to drop their petals when in full bloom. The non-shattering Interspecific Geranium (a cross between ivy and zonal geranium) hanging baskets are very popular, even if they are only single variety baskets. The same trend goes for trailing petunias and calibrachoa baskets. What’s not to love about beautiful colour without the mess of falling petals?
Another interesting trend is hanging vegetable gardens. Farm-to-table takes on a new meaning when gardeners can use their own outdoor space to grow their own food. Some garden centres across Canada, including The Greenery, are now selling hanging baskets that grow tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, and more.
The Greenery Garden Centre in Kelowna on Longhill Road is open annually from March to June. Gardeners can browse through 2.5 acres of greenhouses, one of the largest selection of plants in the Okanagan, to find all their gardening supplies, plants and the perfect hanging basket for their home this season.
