SLCC Recognizes MLK Humanitarian Award Winners
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) February 02, 2016 -- Salt Lake Community College recently selected Philip Anosike, Christine Bray and Jerri Harwell to receive The Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award. These annual awards recognize individuals and/or organizations for outstanding service and advocacy toward fulfillment of “The Dream.”
Anosike was first hired as the project corporation coordinator for the SLCC School of Applied Technology, known then as the “Skills Center.” Currently, he serves the college as an academic advisor in SLCC Student Services and is an adjunct instructor in the SLCC Department of Communication. He has also served as an adjunct instructor at Westminster College, teaching courses in international public relations and intercultural communication. He served as a member of the first SLCC Human Rights Committee in the 1990’s (later changed to the President’s Diversity Committee). He has served as the club advisor to the SLCC Black Student Union and was also the advisor to the first Sudanese Club here at SLCC. Anosike is also a private training consultant, coaching and teaching courses on a range of diversity related topics such as: Attitude Adjustment, Conflict Resolution and Managing within Diversity.
Bray is the vice president of Collective Impact at United Way of Salt Lake, where she leads a team to manage and coordinate all efforts of collective impact. She manages the staff, oversees collective impact investments, basic needs grants and works to measure, track and report outcomes of this work. Before her position on the United Way team she was the CEO for three years at Utah Nonprofits Association (UNA), where she worked to unify, strengthen and elevate Utah’s nonprofits. She has served for over 30 years in the nonprofit sector in a variety of organizations and functioned on many national, regional and local nonprofit boards. She is currently the chair of the Utah Commission of Service and Volunteers (UServeUtah). She also teaches as an adjunct faculty member for Westminster College.
Harwell, originally from Detroit, is an associate professor of English at SLCC, where she teaches beginning and advanced composition courses. She is also a published author, having published locally, nationally and internationally. She is on the Faculty Association Executive Board and has served on numerous other committees for SLCC. Harwell has also served on Jordan School District’s Diversity Advisory Committee, Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Citizen Advisory Board, Utah’s State PTA Board, and numerous other committees and boards throughout the community at large. She is a member of: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an organization dedicated to public service; SLCC’s Black Student Union; and the American Indian Student Leadership club. She has helped to serve meals to the homeless, spoken out regarding racial and social injustices and has encouraged others to do the same. One of her favorite charities is Adopt-A-Native Elder, in honor of her mother who was American Indian from the Grand River Bands of the Ottawas in Michigan.
