Smart Destinations Partner The Field Museum Opens “World’s Fair” Exhibit
(PRWEB) November 05, 2013 -- The Field Museum is considered one of the preeminent natural history museums in the United States, and has long ranked among Smart Destinations’ most popular cultural Chicago attractions. This fall, The Field Museum welcomes a special exhibit that invites the world to learn more about how it came to be the prestigious institution it is today: “Opening the Vaults: Wonders of the 1893 World’s Fair”.
The 1893 World Columbian Exposition marked Chicago’s entrance on the global stage. This exhibit is in part a retrospective of the popular World’s Fair and in part an homage to the history of what would become in the early 19th century The Field Museum. It is an unprecedented chance for visitors to explore a wide selection of the original art and artifacts, many of which have not been displayed to the public since the turn of the century.
Among many highlights of the exhibit, visitors will enjoy archival photography, an immersive large-scale projection series, and a number of key artifacts and entries from the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, including a massive meteorite, a life-size model of a giant squid, historic instruments from Java, and a selection of fossils and skeletons from The Field Museum’s collection. The exhibit also includes a representative sample of materials related to the transition that these artifacts made from the World Columbian Exposition to the Field Columbian Museum, which would build upon this original collection of 50,000 objects to become its modern incarnation as The Field Museum.
“This exhibit really captures this special moment in Chicago history, the glitz and glamor of the World’s Fair and the huge impact that it had on the development of this city,” said Pam Morin, Regional Director with Smart Destinations. “Our customers will enjoy this experience whether they’re first time visitors to Chicago or frequent travelers. It’s got something for everyone and we’re excited to offer it with our products.”
The exhibit recently opened and is expected to draw a large local and international audience. Admission to The Field Museum and “Opening the Vaults: Wonders of the 1893 World’s Fair” is available with Smart Destinations’ Go Select Chicago product. Visitors to the Windy City can add The Field Museum to a customized multi attraction pass, or choose one of the specially curated Go Select packages which include The Field Museum, like the popular Must See Chicago package.
