Montie Beyer, inventor of the Snirt Stopper, got the idea when he built a new house in Glyndon, MN. After the house was built the foundation shifted and the concrete floor in his garage became uneven, which caused his garage door to not seal properly. In the winter, snow and ice would blow under the door, keeping the garage cold and costing Beyer money. “I had my master bedroom built over my garage and it was costing me a fortune because I could not keep my heated garage warm in the winter,’ Beyer said.
Snirt Stopper gets its name from stopping snow and dirt (Snirt) from getting underneath the door. It can seal garage door gaps as large as 1.5 to 2 inches. “We had an energy consultant come to my garage and do some testing to my door before the seal was in place and then after installing the Snirt Stopper. The engineer then pressurized my garage and was able to measure the amount of cold air infiltration before and after. The results are impressive, within 35 minutes of installing the Snirt Stopper, the average temperature inside my garage warmed almost 4 degrees and the seal stopped the cold air from coming underneath the door,” Beyer stated. The gap beneath Beyer’s door was approximately 1 inch high and tapered down to a length of 4 to 5 inches. In Beyer’s situation, having a 16 foot garage door and heating a garage to 45 degrees in the winter will save him $26.67 based upon electricity costs of 12 cents per kw hour.
“If you have a gap larger than what I had, and that is not uncommon, you could pay for your door seal in one season. The Snirt Stopper is truly a “green” energy saving product,” Beyer said with a smile.
Snirt Stopper is made out of tough, 18 ounce, all weather, truck tarp fabric which is sewn in a way where a top tab, bottom tab and flexible foam core actually make the seal. It’s easy to install with the upper tab attaching to the inside of the door. Foam insulation meets the concrete and a second tab sits beneath the original factory door seal creating a better and wider seal. The Snirt Stopper is manufactured to fit any size garage or commercial door working on homes, warehouses, shops, pole barns, airplane hangars, and more.
