Southern Community Newspapers, Inc. Is Live With NewsEngin’s Content-Management Software
(PRWEB) October 23, 2013 -- Southern Community Newspapers, Inc. is live with NewsEngin’s editorial content management software at its seven newspapers, NewsEngin announced today.
Southern Community Newspapers are using NewsEngin’s true cloud-based content management service that distributes stories and related media dynamically to any output platform. NewsEngin replaced a legacy system from Saxotech (now called NEWSCYCLE Solutions).
John Bock, Director of IT and Digital Operations for SCNI, said, "To gain production efficiencies and reduce operating expenses, SCNI had made plans to consolidate all design and pagination processes to a single, centralized Common Copy Desk. SCNI's seven papers used three different front-end systems. This objective would only be possible with a single news/editorial front-end system. We chose to replace all with NewsEngin."
Bock added, "Before signing any contracts, SCNI obtained a commitment from NewsEngin to meet our desired schedule — first launch of 3 papers, 6 weeks after signing. They didn't let us down! NewsEngin hit every project milestone and launch date for the first three papers, the next three papers two weeks later, finishing with the last paper two weeks after that."
J.K. Murphy, Vice President of Content for SCNI, said: "Of all the changes in my career, I have never experienced a technology change that went so smoothly — actually, without a hitch."
George Landau, NewsEngin’s president and founder, added: “Our fast-track deployment for Southern Community Newspapers underscored NewsEngin's design strengths and mastery of the cloud. Just a few weeks after signing them up, we had them ready for production and were delivering custom enhancements that further streamlined their workflow for ads, wire photos and digital publishing."
"For NewsEngin, every deployment offers a chance to improve our software in ways that enhance its value to the hundreds of publications already using it," Landau added.
NewsEngin’s cloud-based content management software creates a virtual newsroom, giving people full access to the system from anywhere with an Internet connection. NewsEngin’s editorial software intelligently routes and packages all content eligible for digital publication and allows all properties in a company to track and share content. A story can be written once in the NewsEngin system and published to multiple publishing platforms with no additional work.
NewsEngin’s editorial software provides full functionality to reporters and editors with tablet devices. From an iPad or Android tablet, journalists using NewsEngin software can:
-- Assign, write and edit stories.
-- Exert full control over digital publication of stories and related assets.
-- Review up-to-the-minute page proofs for print editions.
-- Write print headlines to fit.
-- Capture photos or videos and attach them to stories or photo assignments.
-- Collaborate with peers using integrated instant messaging.
-- Review and publish wire stories and photos.
Regardless of the user’s device, the new app’s capabilities and basic interface are the same, eliminating any learning curve for users who want to work on a mix of devices throughout the day. The software is built on the principle of responsive design, automatically adjusting the user interface to suit the device on which it’s running.
The new software uses HTML5 to run on most desktop and mobile web browsers, including the latest versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Amazon Silk.

About NewsEngin
NewsEngin combines end-user newspaper software and cloud-based services to drive the mission-critical journalistic and publishing processes of print and digital news organizations. That combination of software and services is called NewsEngin Ampere.
Ampere streamlines the creation and publication of high-value content with minimal on-site investment in IT.
At the core of the NewsEngin Ampere system is GPS, a platform-neutral content-management system (CMS) designed to help journalists create, manage and repurpose all types of content. Sometimes referred to as “newspaper software” or an “editorial front-end,” GPS helps organizations adapt quickly to the changing nature of news coverage and distribution.
Stories and text elements are written directly in GPS, using a full-featured word processor that requires no plugins. GPS features a powerful, intuitive plugin for Adobe InDesign (for OS X and Windows). The NewsEngin plugin provides full integration with the editorial database and with a newsroom’s ad-layout software.
NewsEngin uses Amazon Web Services to provide high-performance cloud services with unparalleled resilience, availability, data security and affordability.
