St. Paul Police Foundation Links Community Events To Support the Men and Women of the SPPD
St. Paul, Minnesota (PRWEB) June 03, 2014 -- The St. Paul Police Foundation is proud to announce, today, their second annual golf tournament that helps support its mission of supporting the Saint Paul Police Department (SPPD) in a variety of ways. The golf tournament, slated for Thursday, June 12 at St. Paul’s Highland National Golf Course, is just one of many ways the Foundation raises funds to support the efforts of the SPPD.
Since its inception in 2005, the Foundation has helped support numerous SPPD initiatives including providing life saving equipment, Shop with Cops, the Safe City Camera program, Cops and Kids program and a variety of resources for crime victims.
“We aim to connect the community with the department,” said Nancy Haas, Chair of the St. Police Foundation Board. “We want to inspire the community through events like the golf tournament to help them understand all of the work the department does and to generate monetary support for those endeavors.”
Recently, the foundation helped provide trips to Washington D.C. for 30 representatives of the department for the annual Police Week Memorial, where the names of officers killed in the line of duty are added to the memorial wall. Among those added to the wall were SPPD Officer Josh Lynaugh who died in the line of duty in February of 2013. “This isn’t something the department can pay for entirely out of their budget, however it is extremely important that officers attend events like these to pay tribute to a member of their police family,” said Haas. “That’s where the foundation steps in. With the support of the community we can send our officers to special events like that.”
As a retired SPPD Sergeant and current Foundation Board Member, Kevin Moore has seen how important support of the police department is from both sides. “The Foundation is a bridge between the community and the department, not just in terms of financial support, but in terms of relationship building as well,” said Moore. “The St. Paul Police Department is special in that it has always been about building strong relationships that help keep our streets safe. Knowing the people on your beat by name is very important to officers in St. Paul. Today, the Foundation helps support that effort as well as helping to provide the best in safety for our officers.”
While the golf tournament is quickly becoming a popular way for the community to support the Foundation, with participation more than doubling since its inaugural year, the Foundation raises funds all year to support the SPPD. Those events include November’s Blue Nite Gala which celebrates the work of all St. Paul police officers and helps raises awareness and funds. And new this year, the Holiday Lights in the Park event at Phalen Park which treats holiday light enthusiasts to some of the best displays in town while raising funds for the organization.
“Our goal is to strengthen officer training and safety by providing equipment and special educational opportunities the department cannot afford,” said Haas. “We also want to raise awareness among the community so that they understand the importance of community support when it comes to a large municipal police force.”
