Los Angeles, Calif. (PRWEB) September 02, 2014 -- Once a month at Three Clubs, Stand-Up on the Spot challenges top comics to tell new jokes based on audience suggestions. This year, the show played RIOT, L.A.’s biggest alternative comedy festival, and even launched a second monthly installment in New York City, drawing packed audiences to see “stand-ups throw out their planned material,” writes The New York Times.
“It’s the only show where you choose what the comics talk about,” says host and founder Jeremiah Watkins, who has never missed a show in four years. “The comics are creating material on-the-fly,” he says, making Stand-Up on the Spot “raw, edgy and uncensored.” The Village Voice agrees, calling it “an exciting show” that “brings the current vogue for improvisation into the stand-up world.”
Watkins was inspired to start Stand-Up on the Spot because his two favorite things are improv and standup, but “a lot of comedians only do one or the other” he says. “Improvisers say they don’t do stand-up, stand-ups say they don’t do improv. At our show, performers have a chance to do both.”
Doing stand-up on a new topic may seem daunting, but the show has been a huge hit for comics and audiences alike. Comedian Jerrod Carmichael (Neighbors) told Splitsider, “[It's] one of my favorite shows to do…I just love it.” Comics keep coming back to the show because “it helps them create new material,” says Watkins, “and because it’s really ballsy.”
