Strazzullo Comments on Federal Landlord-Tenant Lawsuit
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 06, 2014 -- According to the New York Daily News article (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/brooklyn/landlords-harassed-targeted-rent-stabilized-tenants-suit-article-1.1757051), published 04/15/2014, the tenants filed a federal lawsuit against their landlords (Tobierre et. al. v. Wasserman et. al.case number: 1:14-cv-02398 (2014)), accusing them of violating the Fair Housing Act as well as city ordinances by illegally forcing tenants out of their rent-stabilized apartments to make room for new renters who pay market rates.
The tenant’s group claims that the landlords, who purchased the buildings in 2009, have been targeting longstanding black tenants who lived in rent-stabilized apartment units. The suit claims the landlords would neglect to do repairs in those apartments, have taken tenants to housing court with falsified claims, forced black tenants to give up their pets and washing machines, and even left rent checks uncashed in an attempt to evict rent-stabilized residents.
“This lawsuit brings to the surface a deeper issue that could have more dangerous implications than illegal rate-hikes,” said Salvatore Strazzullo. “This country has been battling Civil Rights since its beginning and, as a first-generation American-Italian, I had hoped that we were making more progress than this.”
